Patient Medication Information: uses, side effects, how to take - Agamree
What AGAMREE is used for:
AGAMREE is used to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) in patients 4 years of age and older.
How AGAMREE works:
DMD is a genetic condition caused by defects in a specific gene, which normally makes a protein that keeps muscles healthy and strong. In patients with DMD, this protein is not generated, and the body is unable to grow new muscle cells or replace damaged muscle. This causes the muscles of the body to become weaker over time. AGAMREE is used to stabilize muscle strength in patients with DMD.
AGAMREE is similar in structure to a group of medicines called glucocorticoids and corticosteroids. It decreases the body’s reaction to some diseases and reduces inflammation and changes the way the immune system works.
The ingredients in AGAMREE are:
Medicinal ingredient: vamorolone
Non-medicinal ingredients: citric acid (monohydrate), disodium phosphate (anhydrous), glycerin/glycerol, hydrochloric acid (for pH adjustment), octanal, orange oil, orange terpenes, sodium benzoate, sucralose, purified water, and xanthan gum.
AGAMREE comes in the following dosage form:
Oral Suspension: 40 mg / mL
Do not use AGAMREE if:
- you are allergic to vamorolone, any other corticosteroid medicine, or any of the non-medicinal ingredients in AGAMREE (see The ingredients in AGAMREE are:)
- you have severe liver problems
- you have received a type of vaccine called a live or live-attenuated vaccine in the last 6 weeks. Do not receive this type of vaccine during treatment with AGAMREE.
To help avoid side effects and ensure proper use, talk to your healthcare professional before you take AGAMREE. Talk about any health conditions or problems you may have, including if you:
- have or have had an infection such as herpes simplex, chicken pox, tuberculosis, threadworm or fungal infections. If you or your child is exposed to measles or chickenpox during treatment with AGAMREE, talk to your healthcare professional immediately. Serious or fatal side effects can occur if you or your child have not already had these infections.

Other warnings you should know about:
Adrenal insufficiency: AGAMREE can make it hard for your body to respond to stress and illness. Adrenal insufficiency is when the body does not make enough cortisol hormone, a stress hormone that is important for many bodily functions. This can include symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, restlessness, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness or joint pain and may cause death. Talk to your healthcare professional if you have any of these symptoms while taking AGAMREE.
- Do not reduce your dose of AGAMREE or stop taking AGAMREE without taking to your healthcare professional. If you abruptly reduce or stop taking AGAMREE for a few days you may develop adrenal insufficiency which may be life-threatening.
- If you are under unusual stress (such as an acute infection, traumatic injuries or have a major surgical procedure) you may need to take an additional steroidal medicine to avoid adrenal insufficiency. Talk to your healthcare professional about what to do in cases of unusual stress or if you are going to have surgery, including dental surgery.
Talk to your healthcare professional about the AGAMREE Patient Alert Card which contains important safety information about early recognition of the signs and symptoms of adrenal crisis and treatment. Keep this card with you at all times. You can
- also obtain this card through Fax: +1 888-789-9596; Phone: +1 833-294-7033; Email: agamree@programsupport.ca
Immunosuppression: AGAMREE can:
- hide symptoms of infections
- reactivate dormant infections
- worsen existing infections
- cause infections due to lowered resistance
If you think you have an infection while you are taking AGAMREE talk to your healthcare professional.
- Weight gain: AGAMREE can cause an increase in appetite and weight gain. Talk to your healthcare professional about dietary recommendations and nutrition management for patients with DMD before and during your treatment with AGAMREE.

- Breaking a bone (bone fractures)
- Weak bones (osteoporosis, increased risk of broken bones)
Take extra care to avoid any injury, especially falls.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- You should not get pregnant while you are taking AGAMREE.
- Women who are able to get pregnant must use effective birth control while they are taking AGAMREE.
- You should not breastfeed while you are taking AGAMREE as it could pass into breastmilk and harm your baby. Talk to your healthcare professional about the best way to feed your baby during treatment.
- Blood tests and monitoring: AGAMREE can cause abnormal blood test results. Your healthcare professional will decide when to perform blood tests and will interpret the results. If you are going to have a skin test for allergies, talk to your healthcare professional as AGAMREE may interfere with the results.
Children (less than 18 years of age): AGAMREE can affect growth in children. Your healthcare professional will prescribe the lowest dose to minimize the risk. Your healthcare professional will regularly monitor growth and development in growing children.
Tell your healthcare professional about all the medicines you take, including any drugs, vitamins, minerals, natural supplements or alternative medicines.
